Social events

During the class, our focus is to learn a new technique, build on our expanding knowledge or just gain more confidence. The social side of nokémono is designed so everyone can have fun outside Judo. With most events, family members are actively encouraged to participate in the activity. Some of the past activities have included Bowling, Christmas Parties, watching Ice Hockey, Ice Skating, House Party, Laser Tag, and Banger Racing. To date, we have sold over 200 tickets for these events. Future confirmed events include Laser Tag, Ice Hockey, Ice Skating, Christmas Parties and Comedy Clubs. Who knows what we'll do next? Other ideas have included Zorbing, Zoos, trips to other clubs, and even trips outside England.

If you would like to attend, help organise, have any pictures or stories from a social event, or have any suggestions on how to make the social side of nokémono better, please send an email to: social4nokemono@gmail.com or speak to Brian Carr when you visit us.

2011 Summer Party

This stands out as one of our best events so far, everyone had a fantastic time with beautiful weather and lots of fun.

2010 Ice Hockey (click here)

Sadly, Ice Hockey is not a sport you see in Bournemouth, so we took a couple trips to Basingstoke to watch the Basingstoke Bison in the English Premier League. Watching this exciting adrenaline fuelled sport brought parents, seniors and the kids together and after the game, we attempted a little skating ourselves. Pete commented, "Skating is great for balance and core stability for both the kids and the adults and it's amazing how many fighters aren't very graceful on the ice". It was great to see everyone at different skating levels enjoying a fun seasonal activity.

2010 Laser tag (click here)

Challenging and fighting each other is central to Judo however the Laser Tag events were a chance for each of us to channel our inner Rambo! Split up into two teams we were unleashed into a dark maze to shoot opposing team members and score valuable points. What a blast!

We have no rationale for this event, but it was a lot of fun! We also couldn't take photos due to it being very dark and we were far too busy shooting each other.

2010 Banger Races (click here)

The reasoning behind having a social event at the banger races was to get us out of the city on a nice summer day. There was nothing more to it than that - just a get-together in the great outdoors in what turned out to be a really nice and relaxing day.

2010 Christmas Party (click here)

The Christmas Party planning started early, the plan was to have an outdoor BBQ, bouncy castle, and sumo suits. Late Wednesday after Judo, we'd been teasing the weather too much, and Bournemouth was covered in 4 to 6 inches of snow. We had to do a little replanning, but we'd still have the party in the snow. After all, we're tough!

At 10.30pm Friday night, the heavens opened up and melted all the snow. The bouncy castle and sumo suits had to be cancelled, but we decided to go ahead with the party and brave the elements. The party started great, the tunes were blaring, and Jim was serving burgers as fast as he could.

We continued playing games in the main gazebo. Everyone was stacking wood on the bonfire, and it wasn't going to be put out by a little rain. Once the rain stopped we came out of the tents and played a couple games of tag and hide-and-seek, which was great fun, since we had a huge area, anyone could sink into the shadows.

In the end, it was a great coordinated effort. Extra thanks goes to Dougal for organizing the location, Em's for ordering the food, Jim for serving the burgers and Graham for the tunes.
