Gradings: Do I have to grade?

No, you don't have to grade. If you just want to enjoy the sport without the pressure of having to grade, that's fine. However if you do feel like advancing through the grades you will receive all the tuition and support you need.

What are the belts in Judo?

The belts in Judo are an indication of the skill and experience of a Judoka (Judo player). As a person becomes more experienced, he or she can choose to grade and progress to the next level – earning the right to wear a particular colour belt. The belts and grades of Judo are:

5th Kyu 5th Kyu
4th Kyu 4th Kyu
3rd Kyu 3rd Kyu

How do you progress through the grades in Judo?

Progression within the Mon and Kyu grades is based on technical knowledge and application, together with the understanding of Japanese terminology (names of Judo techniques etc.) and supplementary knowledge. Gradings are done within the club at a date agreed between the student and the gradings coordinator.

Progression to 1st Dan involves a technical exam which is a demonstration of your knowledge of the Gokyo (the standard syllabus of Judo throwing techniques). Once passed you will need to fight for your black belt which means winning fights and gaining points to achieve the grade of 1st Dan and beyond.
